Base installation:

Calculate amount of base needed by multiplying the total square feet of excavated area by 200 (one ton of base will cover 200 square feet at one inch thick base will compact by approximately 25%).

Example:

• 675 square feet area requiring 5 inches of base (675/200) x 5 = 16.88 multipy by 1.25 to account for the 25% compaction
• 16.88 x 1.25 = 21.09 round up to 22 tons

Spread base approximately 2 inches thick at a time and compact with a plate compactor or hand tamper for smaller areas. Use a smooth base rake and spray lightly with water to even out base. Repeat this process until you reach your desired height. Remember to measure from the strings to the base frequently. Lay the base in the entire excavated area.
